Speed Networking: A Quick Way to Expand Your Professional Contacts
I feel like I might have just lost half my readers… The third year of medical school is a hectic one. The foundations of our clinical knowledge are fields such as anatomy, embryology, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, microbiology, immunology, and, at least in my school, some basic biostatistics. Some students come into medical school knowing what they want to be though even the most determined often change paths , but many myself included- more so at the beginning of medical school than now really have no idea.
Over the course of a clerkship you not only get the basic clinical knowledge of a specialty, but you also get a feel for the specialty itself. These clerkships are short- I had a month on both Psychiatry and Neurology, and two months on Surgery. As I come off my surgery rotation, now a third of the way through my third year of medical school, it seems like an appropriate time to take a look at the clerkships past, and to glance forward to those awaiting me.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc.

First, the Dashew Center covered the topic of pursuing relationships and understanding romantic and sexual cultural norms in America as an outsider. Next, BCC addressed consent , rape culture and healthy versus unhealthy relationships. Finally, CAPS introduced self-care and on-campus resources for dealing with any kind of harassment or abuse. The second and third presentations were information-based as the presenters aimed to clearly define terms like consent, victim blaming, sexual violence, rape culture, and later, self-care, healthy versus unhealthy relationships, and psychological services.
A significant theme was that of self-care, with pamphlets and checklists handed out to the audience that encouraged them to make time for stress relieving activities every so often and to incorporate these into any relationship, romantic or platonic, to keep it healthy. Most of the audience had found out about the workshop through a Dashew Center newsletter.
After its conclusion, Paige Zhang, a second-year graduate student, said that she liked the references to pop culture throughout the workshop used to illustrate American cultural norms and the educational aspect about consent as it is a topic that goes largely unaddressed in her home country, China. Though the workshop began to talk about some of these issues that international students face, she said they could have been explored more personally.
The workshop did a great job of addressing a topic that is not usually addressed:

Remember, you chose to do this. Be proud of your accomplishments. It is important to note that every online program is different. Some are completely online while others called hybrids require that students come to a physical campus for lectures or test taking. If your schedule permits you to attend campus sessions once in a while then hybrid would be suitable. Universities like NYU operate under synchronous which means students and teachers participate at the same time in a virtual classroom or chat session via the web.
An individual who has the time to attend a virtual session but cannot commute to a college campus would find this a great option. The other learning outlet for online education is asynchronous, which is self-paced allowing students to work independently. If you like not having to attend class on campus or in a virtual classroom then asynchronous would be best for you.

Abby’s not just my favorite Girdler movie; it’s my all-time favorite B-movie. And Carol Speed’s performance as a devoted housewife who plunges into a seamy underworld of demons, decadence, and disco balls is what earned this film a special place in my heart. Therefore, it’s a personal honor to present the following interview. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Carol for sharing her thoughts on Abby with William Girdler.
I believe I first met William Girdler on the set of Abby. I thought he was a cool country white boy. Even though I had never seen any of his films, I trusted him completely as a director. During the 70s there were not many roles for black actresses. As far as I was concerned, William Girdler was giving me a golden opportunity. Compared to being on tour in Lexington Big Bird Cage and Savage with a white theatre owner who didn’t realize he was a bigot, William Girdler was like a knight in shining armor.
How did you land the role of Abby? What was going on in your life when you accepted the part? About a week or two after we left Oakland, Frank Ward along with a woman were gunned down in Berkley, California.
